The Gulf Coast Gladiators proudly recognize Rodney Maurice Toomer as a distinguished member of our Community Who’s Who, a title reserved for individuals who lead, serve, and inspire with excellence.
Born in Westbury, Long Island, NY during the heart of the 1960s Black Revolution, Mr. Toomer’s life has been defined by resilience, purpose, and unshakable community commitment. A graduate of Murphy High School and former U.S. Army Airborne Paratrooper, he later attended Virginia State University and earned an Associate of Arts in Culinary Arts with a focus on baking and pastry. He also holds credentials in Literacy Studies and is a Certified Credit Consultant.
To the community, he’s a legend — known widely as DJ Rodski, whose presence behind the turntables has energized events and inspired aspiring entertainers. His upcoming book, “Spin to Win: DJ Rodski’s Beginner’s Guide to DJing,” will soon be available through Barnes & Noble and Amazon. He is also currently completing his autobiography, “No Slaves Allowed,” a raw and inspiring look into his life’s journey.
Rodney serves in several impactful roles, including Program Director for Opportunity4Entertainers and Inner City Mission, Detention Officer at Taylor Park/Strickland, and as an On-Air Personality and Mixshow DJ for 107.3 iHeart Radio.
Founded in 2010, Opportunity4Entertainers & Performing Arts reflects Rodney’s commitment to uplifting youth and nurturing talent in underserved communities. Through programs like the Opportunities Day School Tour, Broadcast University, and Alabama Hip Hop Week, Rodney has helped unify diverse communities and promote the transformative power of arts and education. As a 2022 Grind Awards recipient for Nonprofit of the Year, his organization stands at the forefront of cultural impact in Alabama.
